... what do I increase for this particular complaint?  I gather that
the thing that causes this is a rapid scan on the NFS partition that
my backup software does (using BRU).

... this message is on the server which is running RAID-5 on VINUM and 
serving multiple clients over a 100 meg switch.  One of the clients
has the tape drive and is backing it up.
