Sorry, it was late, I was jumpy.  The checkpass binary can use /etc/passwd
or PAM for verifying passwords.  It looks like /etc/passwd is the default,
though.  Do you have any messages in your /var/log/messages (or where ever
AUTH messages are stored) file that may indicate why things are failing?
