I did this using an external program.  The user's login shell is a Bourne 
shell script with a 'checkin' facility, run before execing pppd.  Getty 
is run from a script which has a 'checkout' facility.  That way, whenever 
pppd exits, and getty is run, the user on that tty is checked out.
