Probably no.  There's ext2 backwards-compatibility, but from what I recall, as soon as someone uses extents under the ext4 filesystem it is no longer backwards-compatible with ext2/3.

On the other hand, installing sysutils/fusefs-ext4fuse or sysutils/e2fsprogs ought to be straightforward.
