Hello all.
I'm sorry if this sounds stupid.

I was wondering if you could recommend me resources for common activities=20
that simple and basic ISP's have to do if they are running FreeBSD.

I've been working with FreeBsd for personal use when I can but I don't have=
=20
much experience althouth I have a few sites of my own running with FreeBsd=
=20
and Apache.

Now at my job we are planning to move to FreeBsd and Apache and leave NT on=
=20
most of the machines (only a few will be leaving to support ASP and=20
FrontPage extensions for some clients).

We want to run apache, cgis, mysql, sendmail, dns on the Freebsd machines (all=
=20
these services are running on other machines now so it is not so urgent to=
=20
move all the services to the FreeBSD ones immediately but would like to do=
=20
it in the near future). We are running FreeBSD 3.2 now, apache is running=20
without problems. I'm not using sendamil now there so I deactivate it and=20
my machines are running very good and I'd like to start with the other=20
services and would like to have the background so I can tell at job that I=
=20
can handle the other activities fine. I have a testing machine so no=20
problem to interrupt the main service. I'll test and practice everything=20
before moving to the real ones.

I=A1d like to be proficient and able of:
1) Provide security. I was wondering what ports do I need to leave open and=
=20
what special considerations to have with the machines. What to monitor and=
=20
where as a daily audit.

2) FTP service. Need to have quotas on users and put the users on their=20
home directories. Do you recommend to leave the FTP that installs by=20
default or maybe move to another one?

3) Sendmail service. My main question is how to avoid relay on my server so=
=20
spammers do not abuse of it. Besides I need to control the space of users=
 also.

4) Users administration. How to suspend users when they do not pay and all=
=20
the general administration activities for users. One thing we would like to=
=20
have is to have users of more than 8 chars in their username (I don't know=
=20
if the latest version of FreeBsd support that, documentation of 3.2 says=20
only 8). I know how to do do all with the appropiate command, just=20
wondering if you recommend a tool for it.

5) Apache. Any available tool for its administration?. I can do it manually=
=20
with the default "ee" editor but I was wondering if there is another editor=
=20
not so basic but not "too" complicated like VI. I'm working without the=20
graphical environment. How could I rotate logs on a daily, weekly or monthly=
=20
basis? How could I suspend a site if a client do not pay?

6) Scripts. Any good sites for simple resources of free CGI's?. On this. I=
=20
was wondering what do you suggest for special need on scripts. I have=20
programmed on other languages. Do you suggest to have the scripts I need to=
=20
run as PERL programs or it is better to follow the C path?

I read once on the list that it would be a book for ISPs using FreeBSD. Do=
=20
you know if the book was edited?. Any other books?
Do you know of another list special devoted to ISP's running FreeBSD?

Thanks in advance for all your help and I'm sorry to those that have more=20
experience if you think this is a stupid question. For those who would like=
=20
to answer me and don't want to waste the bandwith of the list, this is my=20
email: jbiquez@icsmx.com

Thanks a lot

JB
