Ah.  That makes sense.  Technically, it was documented, but that was a
very very recent change:
revision 1.7
date: 2001/01/17 11:51:43;  author: ben;  state: Exp;  lines: +19 -1
document ${KERNEL}

so I agree with your sentiment as far as that goes.
