If it's so terrible, then why is it that 3ware's network-attached storage
box (which uses 3ware's RAID cards) runs FreeBSD internally instead of
Linux?

The person your boss spoke to was almost certainly a salesdroid who either
honestly has no clue, or has been told to push Linux for some reason or
another. I will let Mike comment on the quality (or lack thereof) of the
Linux driver compared to his FreeBSD driver (and I know he will), but I
would not put too much stock in what this Rackables person told you. Call
back and ask them why they think the FreeBSD driver is terrible, and
ask for lots of details. If they can't give you any, ignore them.
