Higher should be better, but as far as I can tell, the rtc driver is really not the limiting factor in VMWare performance anymore. So, I think 1000 HZ should be sufficient for normal operation. The major exception to this would be in situations where the virtual machine uses a large hz setting that approaches your system's hz setting.
