The XFree version installed is from the 4.6 CD
distribution. To your second question I have to say
that there is no ~/.xsession on my host. I relied on
the system default startup scripts
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xsession and .../xsm/xsm.system
and their man pages. This can be a starting point.
