I've done that already.  Native is 800x600, and I put that in 
/etc/X11/XF86Config.  When I do startx, it pulls from that file (I see 
it saying "loading from /etc/X11/XF86Config" ....

I've also done defaultdepth 24, etc.  Still the same issue.
