	Which books do you have, The Complete FreeBSD?  Are you using UserPPP or 
Kernel PPP?  Personally I had a very hard time getting Kernel PPP to do 
anything(including dial) and eventually ended up stuck with it not being able 
to connect via PAP or CHAP.  I use the User PPP program to connect.  When you 
type in ppp, what happens?
