How are you invoking X?

To get 16 bit color, you have to modify /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xservers.  
Put the `-bpp 16' after your display entry ( :0 ) and restart xdm.  That 
should do it, ASSUMING X finds a mode to display at that resolution.
