I returned a ze1000 Pavilion laptop for much the same set of reasons. The
design itself seems prone to overheating, with lockups and spontaneous
shutdowns common. If you google for HP notebook and problems, you will
see that you are not the only one.
Despite the extremely low price for what seems like a
lot of machine, I advise anyone who is in the market to not consider HP.
Unlike IBM, Apple or even Sony, it doesn't seem like any engineering
native to HP actually goes into their product. It looks, feels, and
crashes just like any other cheapy notebook. You would think that all
those years experience making damn fine calculators might have helped.

HP is also selling the exact same laptop under several monikers, one per
retailer, I believe. I don't know if this qualifies as deceptive
advertising, but it makes their website a pain, since they only list
products for support on their website by their direct from HP labels.

The next box I am trying is a DELL 4100, which seems to be just enough
behind the curve to be supported by Xfree86 and current enough to be
worth while. You can pick them up with a full warranty from
outlet.dell.com for a very reasonable price if you are willing to go
refurbished. I'll let you know how it goes.
