Your geometry is wrong.  It should be:

Extended translation enabled in SCSI-Select of the 2940:
    255 heads, 63 sectors/track, #MB reported by the disk probe / 7 cylinders

Extended translation disabled in SCSI-Select of the 2940:
    64 heads, 32 secotors/track, #MB reported by the disk probe cylinders

Since the 2940 ships with extended translation enabled, you probably want
the first geometry.  Of course, as it states in your Adaptec manual, only
DOS requires extended translation (your boot partition for FreeBSD (ie /)
must reside entirely below the 1gig boundary so that the BIOS can get
to the boot blocks if you do turn off extended translation).
