Nope, ... but it doesn't seem to help either. Maybe I am doing it wrong:

    mount -t devfs devfs /usr/diskless/dev

? I also tried chroot first, then 'mount -t devfs devfs /dev' - no 
difference. But I don't see what devfs has got do do with make?
