Now this is weird.

I don't get failed chunks patching, so there must be some faulty 
file involved.

Please do the following and report back.

ls -l /usr/ports/distfiles/perl /usr/ports/lang/perl5.8/files
cd /usr/ports/lang/perl5.8
cat distinfo 
md5 files/*
--
