I can try to figure what's going on if I get to know what I am to look
for, I mount my root fs from a drive that's not tagged capable and have
a serial gdb at hand.

I already sent S=F8ren my dmesg output of a failing drive (IBM DTLA,
FWIW), but but I fear it's not too informative.

Maybe some conditionally-compiled debug stuff can also help
here. I am willing to test this so that 4.6 can ship with tagged
queueing.
