You might want to try searching the list archives for more detail, but
somewhere I think I've seen a reference to NFS only supporting 2GB files.
I have no recollection of the specifics of this -ie whether it was
FreeBSDs NFS (at that time) or NFS more generally.  If you don't get any
other feedback, you might try contacting Matt Dillon
(dillon@backplane.com?) to pick his brains - as I recall he has done some
bug squashing in the NFS code.
