Have you tried the X configuration you used with Mandrake (you may
need a bit of tweaking WRT the mouse device name and font paths)?

Alternatively, there are links over a dozen web pages for linux
users with this laptop at http://www.linux-laptop.net/dell.html,
some with working X config files (e.g.
http://theory.gsi.de/~vanhees/XF86Config-Dell-inspiron4000) that
you can tweak.
