Long usernames work fine under BSD/OS 2.x. There are a good number of other Unixes that they work fine under too. On those systems, I seldom have a problem when compiling source due to >8 char login names. I'm not sure the problem is as big as people make it out to be. The biggest complication I can think of is making everything work (or at least not break too badly) with NIS. At the very least I think it would be a good thing to move in the direction of having the userland stuff look pretty with long usernames (eg. perhaps have w truncate it to 8 chars since there is already too much there, have who give the full name since there is lots of space, etc.).
