not sure if it is related but you did change the intrmask for ppc0 in the
kernel config file from "net" to "tty" didn't you ?

	device          ppc0    at isa? port? flags 0x40 tty irq 7

the default comes with "net" which is good to run plip but
not for printing (it shouldn't crash though...).
