Downloaded most current source snapshot, ran the configure command which =
completed successfully.  When I tried make command - get this error:

"config.mak", line 4: Need an operator
"Makefile", line 820: warning: duplicate script for target "%.d" ignored
"Makefile", line 823: warning: duplicate script for target "%.d" ignored
Error expanding embedded variable.

Any ideas?

mplayer is definitely continuously developed, it's not an abandoned
project! They just do not follow a release scheme at the moment.
If the svn version does the job you want it to do, it's definitely worth =
a try.
I personally like mplayer as it is still lighter than VLC.
