DSL customers have one big problem not shared by those who run dialup, ISDN or leased-line connectivity: typically they do not get to set up a packet filter on their line. I have been setting up FreeBSD machines as filtering bridges with great success. I have written an article on how to do this. It is available at http://www.freebsd.org/~nsayer/ (look down in the section about filtering bridges for the link).
