While someone  "is there", could all  the entries be changed  to include
exec in them, where sensible? It appears, our shell is not about to wise
up any time  soon to avoid forking  when the command line  consists of a
single command. With explicit exec there will be a little bit of saving.
For example:

-59      1       *       *       *       root    periodic daily
+59      1       *       *       *       root    exec periodic daily

BTW, bash does not have this problem,  but tcsh does :( Don't know about
zsh or ksh.
