How comes this?

I booted the system, but remembered that i wanted to boot with -v, so
i hit ^\ quickly during the rc startup. Thus, i've quit the mount
command, but a `reboot' gave me:

fs = /
panic: update: rofs mod

How comes that the root fs is being modified before the mount system
call that updated its status to r/w completed?
