Sorry to follow up to this so late, but none of the answers on the
list so far mentions what I think is the problem ...

You ran the gimp1 port and had some LC_* variable set, right? At least
I've got the same kind of errors under that condition.  The problem
seems to be that submenus / items are added to menus under the wrong 
name (original and localized names get mixed up). The fix is to either 
unset your LC_* before running gimp, or use the gimp1-i18n port
instead (which works fine for me with menu items in Swedish).
