Make sure you have a few DNS entries in your /etc/resolv.conf file.
This file should look like the following:

domain <domain name>
nameserver <nameserver address>
[nameserver <nameserver address>]
[etc.]

Othe rthan that, I don't know why it wouldn't connect.  I use slirp
1.0c, and it works just fine.
