I really like that layout and it is much better than the current page. The only difference I noticed between index1.html and index2.html is that index2.html is right shifted about an inch leaving a lot of white space. I like index1.html. You might give the sidebar a background color and put a navigation bar at the top to quickly jump to things like FAQ, search, etc. See www.perl.com.
