I really like that layout and it is much better than the current page.
The only difference I noticed between index1.html and index2.html is that
index2.html is right shifted about an inch leaving a lot of white space.
I like index1.html.  You might give the sidebar a background color and put
a navigation bar at the top to quickly jump to things like FAQ, search, etc.

I agree with you. I suggest you to try the look and feel of that page and let
me
know if you love it more than the actual freebsd.org page.
