I don't know.  Can't it just try to use the selected device at the
appropriate time?  If it's not there, it will get an ENODEV or some
such thing.

Well, if any kind of quick hack could be put in in the meantime, I
think it would be worthwhile.  It's a major pain trying to install on
a system (like the ThinkPad 560) that doesn't have a CD-ROM drive.
