MAPI is some microsoft standard for manipulating, reading,
   and writing mail

Umm, no it is not. MAPI is a proprietary API. It is
not in any way, in any meaningful (i.e. un-debased)
sense of the word, a standard. 'microsoft standard'
is oxymoronic.
