A followup.  My girlfriend went to the US recently and brought me back
the american version of this one the VGN-A290.  It's lovely and under
5.3 the power management works wonderfully :) Thanks ACPI guys.

ps. it's not quite the same spec as the VGN-A 297, missing the blue
tooth basically :(.  Still it's pretty nice though :).
