I suspect the best way is to save all your data and do a clean reinstall.

Barring that, I suspect the best way is to get a CD ROM and do a binary
upgrade.  You may need to upgrade to 3.x first.

If you do cvsup I suspect you'll need to upgrade to 3.2, then to 3.4-STABLE,
then to 4.0.
