If it's a simple message, use the vacation program (comes with the base
system).  If you want a customized reply, or different replies based on
the contents of the incoming email, use procmail (ports/mail/procmail). 
Procmail can be set up to be a simple autoresponder, a full-blown
mailing-list, or just about anything inbetween.  The procmailex manpage
has some sample autoreply rules.
