Look at the -n option to tunefs (man tunefs).  Also, make sure that
you are running a kernel with the following option on in the kernel
config file:

options	SOFTUPDATES	#Enable FFS soft updates support

It's been on by default since 4.1, but still needs to be switched
in the superblock of each file system using tunefs.
