Dear Sir,

I am writing to thank you for your answer and say that I think the nsswitch
referred to by Mr Donovan provides considerably more functions than
/etc/host.conf.

nsswitch allows among other things

. transparent resolution of MS Windows NetBIOS names
. allows all the users in an NT domain SAM to appear in your password file.
Access can be managed by using what is permitted by the domain.

Thank you,

Yours sincerely.
