Check this out in make:

        if ((pwd = getenv("PWD")) != NULL) {

Anyone else think that this is totally bogus and should be removed?
It certainly EXPLAINS a few things! :-)

With all the shells in existance out there, I don't think that $PWD
should or can be trusted.  Comments?
