The cdd utility reads directly from the Audio CD's  blocks which can then 
be manipulated . In the case of cdd it can read the audio blocks and
writes them to a file. Just think of the Audio CDs as a regular
CD but with special SCSI commands to read the blocks or tracks from
the Audio CD.
