Uninstall your customised binutils.

FreeBSD 4.x is using 2.10:

ziplok:~>as --version
GNU assembler 2.10.1
ziplok:~>uname -a
FreeBSD ziplok.dis.org 4.3-STABLE FreeBSD 4.3-STABLE #0: Sat Jul  7 10:52:55 PDT 2001     msmith@ziplok.dis.org:/local0/build/src/sys/compile/GATEKEEPER  i386
