Since people who complained about this failed to come up
with something better, I have (partly) backported it into
6-STABLE and I am happy with it. While one can surely argue
about this "festering junkpile that does not belong in the
kernel" until the day hell freezes, I am glad to have
something that actually works.

It's no big deal (at least not for 6-STABLE)...
