I use this on my HP Omnibook 6100: (4.7-STABLE)

In my kernel config:

    # For PnP/PCI sound cards
    device          pcm

relevant dmesg output:

    pcm0: <ESS Technology Allegro-1> port 0x3000-0x30ff irq 5 at device 3.0
on pci2

Sound works fine, even the volume buttons on the right side work.
