what sources did you compile the kernel from?  the sources on the CD or what?  this might be an issue of using a newer kernel, but not a newer "make world" if you know what i mean.

if you want i can email you me kernel conf file.  i have 1 3com905 nic.  but maybe someone else on the list will have a better idea
