I assumed there was some formal method, rather than hand-waving... 

Hey out there! Please close PR kern/11280. After much tooth-grinding, headaches
and angry words this was finally proven to be a hardware problem.

Mon May 24 13:00:36 BST 1999 avail memory = 62734336 (61264K bytes)
Tue May 25 10:38:47 BST 1999 avail memory = 62734336 (61264K bytes)
Tue May 25 16:45:38 BST 1999 avail memory = 30347264 (29636K bytes)
Wed May 26 09:56:04 BST 1999 avail memory = 30347264 (29636K bytes)
Wed May 26 16:16:51 BST 1999 avail memory = 62717952 (61248K bytes)

"Nah, mate, it'll be that old SCSI card, nothing wrong with the memory"...
