if you are legal US resident you can install DES from ftp.freebsd.org or
from CDROM, (just run /stand/sysinstall)

if you are outside USA, you still can install DES manually
from the South Africa

however, there's no way to convert DES passwords <--> MD5 passwords,
except "crack" :-)
