I do something similar, run make world -j4 continously and bonnie -s 600
on the separated slices, also run two mkhybrid programs which builds iso
images from slackware mirror ( approximately 600 MB ). Mkhybrid causes
immediate hang before fixes, but now all this mix of workloads runs fine.
All slices are softupdate mounted, including root slice.
