Sorry for the noise, reading the instructions carefully helps.  I was  
missing options SC_PIXEL_MODE, and now everything appears to be  
working perfectly, including the boot-time mode change via hints.sc. 
0.flags.

8-bit modes give just a blank window (with the right dimensions  
though), and I can switch to a different console and switch to a  
working mode.
