Hmm... after disabling the ATA_ENABLE_ATAPI_DMA and all pci nics in my kernel (except for the 3c90x xl driver and the miibus that it requires, this was a change to my kernel config that I had planned for a little while now..) I seem to be able to run xfree 3.3.6 + an opengl screensaver without freezing my system within an hour (since january I haven't been able to)... not a very reliable test and I'll have to try this more then once, but it does seem to improve things at first glance. After testing it a few times I'll try adding the devices one by one to see if I can get any results that way.
