I'm aplogizing in advance for trouncing on grog's work, however,
people installing/running current are getting bit by this and
this short term fix has stabilized my vinum striping setup.

At a glance, vinumlock.c also may have a place where this is a
problem (line 251), but this patch was sufficient to stabilize
my machine.
