.profile will not be run when an xterm starts, because xterms are not,
by default, "login shells".  There are a number of ways around this;
you can force xterm to start a login shell with a parameter or
resource, or you can put this function in your .bashrc.

The meaning of a login shell isn't as clear as it used to be, but in
my opinion this function belongs in your .bashrc in any case.
