Ok, I know it's in bad taste to follow up on one's own post.  I just
realized that there's a better solution here...

Assuming that *ONLY* the owner of a mailbox will be reading his/her mail,
the solution is to check the last time the mailbox was read.  Same thing
that finger(1) does.
