Ok - this is obviously a problem caused by myself, but what puzzled me was the behaviour of fbsd. Fbsd 3.4-stable - cvsup'd Jan 8th. Add a route manually - forget to load routed - then try to e.g. ping one of the IPs it's supposed to route - and the box locks up. Can't even use alt-ctrl-del, have to hit reset button.
